Trieste in May was caffè culture with Habsburg posture—the city drinks more coffee than anywhere in Italy and has its own vocabulary for ordering it. Da Michele's Naples import queues fast; Marise does the osteria end properly. Miramare castle juts into the Adriatic twenty minutes away.

We ate at 4 restaurants, stopped at Dream Team Bar and one other, and fell for this coastal oddity that feels more Viennese than Venetian. It's Italy's least Italian great city, and that's the charm.
