The Stars That Night

A night sky is a receipt: it says where you were, and when, precisely. For eight of the best nights of this journey — London's washed-out farewell, a new moon off the Antarctic Peninsula, a full moon directly overhead on the equator, the aurora punching through polar night above Tromsø, a setting crescent beside the moai at Tahai, the galactic core over the Salar de Uyuni, Orion rising out of the Wahiba Sands, and midnight at Gorak Shep the night before Everest Base Camp — we went back to the exact coordinates and clock times our photos remember, and recomputed the entire sky.

Every star brighter than the naked-eye limit, the planets that were up, the moon lit to the percent it was really lit, the Milky Way where it really ran. No stock skies, no approximations: the right stars, at the right minute, over the right horizon.

The story ends with the two skies we already know we won't see: the North Pole this July and the South Pole next January, where the sun circles the horizon all day and hides every star in the sky — plus a ledger of the moon's phase on every single night since the journey began.

This is what was actually overhead. All you have to do is keep being outside, at night, in enough different places, for long enough.
