We stayed on the island of Pohnpei, home to the archaeological site of Nan Madol, the former capital of the Saudeleur Dynasty. Its original name was Soun Nan-leng, meaning “Reef of Heaven,” and it is sometimes referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”","It amazes me that more people don’t know about Nan Madol. It’s an ancient city that once housed more than 25,000 people, built from massive basalt stones in a canal-like structure. Now overgrown by mangroves, nobody truly knows how—or why—it was built in the first place. We had to remove our shoes and socks to wade through a shallow canal before reaching the main complex. The presence of the place felt powerful, ancient, and deeply mystical. You have to use your imagination to envision what it may have looked like in its prime.","Another highlight on the island was hiking the Sokehs Ridge Trail, where the remains of Japanese World War II anti-aircraft guns, bunkers, and command posts still sit at the top of the mountain.
