Dolomites

We stayed at the Hubertus in the hills above Brunico, where the infinity pool juts out over the valley like a diving board into nothing. The view stretched across green pastures and pine forests, the kind of place where you spend half the morning just staring from the terrace. The hotel sits high enough that the town below looks like a model village, all red roofs and church spires pressed into the folds of the mountains.

Lago di Braies was predictably crowded but still worth it. The water is that impossible turquoise you don't believe until you see it, and we rowed one of the wooden boats out toward the cliffs. Someone had built dozens of rock cairns on the shore, which felt a little Instagram-desperate but also kind of charming in the moment. The hike around the lake was easy, mostly flat, good for working off the polenta we'd eaten the night before.

Dinner at Atelier Moessmer Niederkofler in Brunico was the kind of meal that makes you sit up straighter. Norbert Niederkofler's cooking is all local Alpine ingredients treated with the precision of a jeweler. We had venison, wild herbs, something fermented we couldn't quite identify but ate anyway. The room was modern and understated, which let the food do the talking. It's the best meal we've had in the Dolomites, maybe in Italy this trip.
